We undertake service projects to address the specific needs of the community, ranging from environmental to social initiatives, toward the betterment of the social conditions of our communities.
We believe that service is a two-way street, that not only does it benefit the recipient, but it also helps the one serving to develop humility, compassion, and other positive qualities. Crucially too, service projects are opportunities to break down barriers and promote unity, as by working together on common goals, people from different backgrounds can build understanding and fellowship. The goal is not just to provide temporary relief, but to contribute to lasting positive change and empower individuals and communities.
Gifts of Sight
Have Hope has an on-going service project to distribute pre-used spectacles to members of needy communities who are in need of visual aids, and pivots on the collaborative efforts of other organisations. Without any exchange of money in the entire service chain, the pre-used glasses move along the chain through the kind generosity and loving service of well-wishers and supporters until they finally reach the end recipients - truly acts of kindness creating endless ripples. This unique and inspirational programme – Gifts of Sight – was started by Judyth Gregory-Smith who had for several years collected used glasses in Malaysia, Australia and the UK, and then would personally distribute them to isolated villages around Myanmar for people who have no hope of being able to buy them. Judyth was a travel writer who has published travel books and numerous articles in travel and in-flight magazines.
Sadly, covid 19 put a stop to her travels. Inspired by and with the gracious permission of Judyth Gregory-Smith, Have Hope is continuing Judyth’s wonderful work here in Malaysia since then.
We truly find it heart-warming that many friends and well wishers step up and offer their time, talent, and resource towards this project. We are thrilled that pre-loved glasses that are no longer useful to their first owners get a new lease of life with new owners - who would often express much joy when they receive free spectacles, though pre-used, that improve their vision.
